Have you ever watched the TV show Cheaters? It’s a Dallas-based reality show in which jilted lovers hire a private investigation agency to investigate their spouse or so-called soul mate to see whether or not he/she is being unfaithful. But do private investigators deal just with wandering lovers? What other jobs does a private eye, inquire about? I will attempt to explain the job and the role of a private detective.

The point of their work is to uncover the truth. During this hunt, a PI, should remain impartial in order to perform his task aptly. Often, it is ironic that clients of private investigation firms do not want the truth, they just want to win. Like this attitude, some of the clients in the programme Cheaters have a hostile attitude. The job of a PI and his agency is to expose the facts and help their client come through.
For the PI, exposing the truth is a double-edged sword. He or she earns their wage by not just uncovering the facts but knowing that revealing those facts can damage their client’s chances of winning, especially a lawsuit. The good news as well as the bad news need to be told to the clients. There is nothing worse for an attorney than to turn up at court and be confronted with some spiteful statement or fact that he should have been aware of. The private investigator has been hired because a lawyer requires all the facts beforehand. Whatever the outcome, it is the private investigator’s job to discover the facts and let the case develop on its own.
Just because the other side of a lawsuit wins in court, that does not mean that the private eye did not do his job properly. It only means they performed their job to the highest standards for their profession and to the best of their knowledge. In is not as if the decision of a judge or jury could be swayed by the private eye is it?
